Smart Mobility Hub (SMH)

How can we ensure that the largest rooftop sports park in the Netherlands becomes a vibrant and inclusive space that truly resonates with the diverse communities of Amsterdam Southeast?

The municipality is building the biggest sports park on a rooftop in the Netherlands, located in Amsterdam Southeast. They asked us to research how they can ensure that this sports park, on the roof of the SMH and scheduled for completion in 2027, is designed and organized in a way that attracts people from Amsterdam Southeast. We conducted participatory research that resulted in a Kansenkaart. Together with relevant stakeholders and community members from the nearby area, we brainstormed relevant ways to draw local residents to the sports park. The results were pleasantly received, and now we are working on setting up the following steps to ensure that local ownership is felt. We are doing this by creating a communication plan to keep residents well-informed of any developments. Additionally, we are exploring possibilities for temporary activities that foster collaboration between local residents and the municipality. Our goal is to develop a program in collaboration with local parties at the SMH that is so exciting that many people will want to be involved.

By involving the community in the planning process, we’re shaping the rooftop sports park to be an inclusive space that reflects the vibrant spirit of Amsterdam Southeast.
